Sustainable Sussex by the Sea: Ways to ‘Go Green’ throughout our ‘Sussex by the Seasons’

January 17, 2024

It's never been more important to be mindful about the way in which we travel. It's not about doing all things perfectly all the time, but making the small changes, like switching the car journey to a cycle ride, or utilising local public transport systems.

Here are some more ways you can ‘go green’ and help to preserve our beautiful Sussex by the Sea for generations to come.

Make the most of public transport

Planning a day trip? Why not consider taking public transport, cycling, or walking instead of driving, especially for short distances. This can reduce your carbon footprint and help to improve air quality of the towns and villages.

There are some brilliant bus routes across Arundel, Bognor Regis, and Littlehampton, including the brand new 500 route which links many of the villages between Chichester, St. Richard’s Hospital, Shopwhyke, Tangmere, Fontwell, Barnham, Yapton and Littlehampton.

You can also enjoy the beautiful scenic route of the 600 bus running from Elmer and Bognor Regis to Chichester Bus Station and onwards via the Service 60 to the South Downs National Park via some glorious Sussex countryside and quaint villages en route to Midhurst, perfect for a ‘slow travel’ type of day out!  Check out the Plan Your Journey pages of the Stagecoach Bus South website.

For great value regular services along the coast between Brighton and Portsmouth hop aboard the 700 Coastliner; your sunshine service to the sea!

As well as an abundance of fantastic bus routes, we also have a great railway service, with Southern Railway connections and special offers to our Sussex by the Sea destinations of Arundel, Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, along the coast between Portsmouth and Brighton  and from London and beyond too.

Support local farms and businesses

Whenever you choose to purchase locally grown produce, not only do you support local farmers and their important businesses, you also reduce the carbon footprint of food transportation.

With many farm shops dotted across Arundel, Bognor Regis, and Littlehampton you are sure to find everything you need for your barbecue, family dinners or picnics, a stone’s throw from your door, whether you’re visiting or resident in the district.

Pick up fresh eggs from Rookery Farm, Bognor Regis, enjoy the best in local meat from Arundel Butchers, and why not pop into Angmering Village Greens for your fruit and vegetables.

You can also grow your own vegetables and herbs at home by taking advantage of the fabulous garden centres dotted across the Arun District, including  The Arundel Gardener, at Climping near Littlehampton,  Chalcroft Nurseries  north of Bognor Regis and Arundel Farmers’ Market on the 3rd Saturday of each month and Denmans Gardens at Fontwell open all year round for great food , fruit and veg – and more. All with plenty of friendly faces on-hand to offer the best in botanical and culinary advice!

Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle

The first step towards sustainability is to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Make sure to dispose of your waste in the correct manner and recycle as much as possible. You can also reduce waste by using reusable bags, water bottles, and containers; and using the many Recycling and Rubbish bins provided across the district. You can find all the relevant information regarding this on the Arun District Council website and more great inspiration at Sussex Green Living too.

You can help keep our towns tidy by joining in with some local beach cleans, like the beach clean at Bognor Regis  Check out the Marine Conservation Society website for how to find more local Beach Cleans (The annual event takes place across the UK each September.)  Keep Britain Tidy can signpost how you can start your own group clean too! And follow our social media where we’ll share other green living ideas from our local hospitality businesses and green minded event organisers.
