How will YOU celebrate Sussex Day in Sussex by the Sea?

Send us pictures of YOUR Sussex Day celebrations

A message from the Chairman of Arun District Council on why we'd like to see your Sussex Day celebration pictures

The Sussex County Flag

"Sussex Day is steeped in history linking back to the 13th century when St Richard was canonised as our patron saint. In recent years, Ian Steedman has successfully endeavoured to encourage the residents of Sussex to celebrate the county's culture particularly on the 16th June each year.

Sussex Day is all about showing the world the things that make us proud to live in this beautiful county. The folk songs, poetry, local wine and beers, Sussex recipes, crafts, countryside, Morris dancing and even the colloquial words and phrases are recognised and celebrated.

This also provides an opportunity for charities, community groups and businesses to reach out and demonstrate to the public what they offer.

For me, to see the Sussex Flag flying across the Arun District and raise my glass to the joy of living in our beautiful county would be my way to celebrate. Some may wish to go a step or two further and play a musical instrument to local songs and sounds, recite poetry or even spin a lump of clay on a potter’s wheel.

On the 16th June the familiar and much loved march Sussex By The Sea, composed in 1907 by William Ward Higgs in Bognor Regis will be played loud and clear at times in all three principle towns.  This year I would like to see the flag flying to mark the day across the district.

I respectfully ask whatever you will be doing on Sussex Day, to take some pictures and submit them to Sussex by the Sea/Arun District Council to be included on our website and other media to showcase events that took place.

Add a few lines or even write a poem on what Sussex Day means to you and what you were doing. I will be presenting certificates to those that send in the best pictures and lines and present a trophy for the best of all the submissions."

Councillor Alan Gammon, Arun District Council, June 2018
